James Baldwin, born in Harlem in 1924, was an American novelist, essayist, and playwright during the Great Depression. He made great progress in raising awareness of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in the United States, and his first published work appeared in The Nation in 1947. He also closely worked with Beauford Delaney, who said he was "first living proof that a Black man could be an artist."
